Zebra - 30 cent Venda stamp set

Mbidi Burchell's Zebra

Zebra are the only striped members of the horse family. Burchell's zebra are white with distinct black stripes all over and occasionally light brown or greyish "shadow" stripes on the white at the hindquarters. There is considerable variation in the width of the stripes and no two animals are identical. Zebra are grazers that prefer long stemmed grass and are often found with other species, especailly the wildebeest, which prefers shorter grass. They usually occur in family parties and, being regular drinkers, are seldom  found at any great distance from water. Only one foal is dropped after a gestatoin period of 11 to 12 months. The mother-foal bond is very close, specially during the first three or four days.
