Barred minnow
The barred minnow is one of the most attractive river fishes of Venda. It is easily distinguished from other minnows by the large dorsal fin set well back, the large oblique mouth and the conspicuous series of dark, vertical bars on the body. This species is an active swimmer and schools in clear flowing waters below rapids or near the edges of streams. It preys on insects and other small aquatic creatures. Weirs in riers have interfered with the movement of the barred minnow and it is now rare in Venda.
