MALTESE

The Maltese is the oldest of the toy breeds. Dogs of this type were known well before the Christian era and were called Canis melitaeus—dog of Malta—in Roman times. It is thought that this breed spread to Western Europe either during the expansion of the Roman Empire or during the Crusades of the Middle Ages. The Maltese always was a popular companion dog for ladies and may first have come to Southern Africa in that capacity.
