Talapia
The Mozambique tilapia, or blue kurper, is important in aquacuture, subsistence fishing and sport fishing in Venda. It grows to a failry large size of up to 3 kilgrams in weight and has a prized eating flesh. When breeding, the male turns deep blue-black with a white chin and throat and the tips of the dorsal and causal fins become a bright red. It constructs a large saucer-shaped nest in which the spawning occurs. The female collects the fertilized eggs in her mouth and incubates them and the hatched larvae until the young are free-swimming and able to fend for themselves.
